How FishSmack Works

Welcome to FishSmack.com.  FishSmack will be the hottest online fishing and boating scene on the web. We are just getting started! You, and all your other friends and users, control the site!  As a user, you choose all of the sites content by reading, finding, submitting, smacking (voting), discussing and sharing the fishing news, images, websites, videos, and podcasts that appeal to you. The site is very, very simple and submitting and smacking is even easier.  Take a few minutes to learn how to use the site (if you haven’t used a similar site such as Digg, StumbleUpon, Reddit, …) and you are on your way.

Here is how FishSmack works:

  • Register: In order to post, smack and comment, you have to complete a simple registration (username, email, and password). You can register by pressing “Register” in the Main Menu box or there is a click here to register link in the Login box.

  • Find It: Anytime you are surfing online and find a cool fishing video, image, website, article, news, forum post or podcast that you think would be a cool addition to the site, place it on FishSmack.com so others can share in your find.

  • Submit It:  Simply press the “Submit a new story” button in the upper right hand column.  You will enter the url, a title, a short description, some tags and select the best category. You will be able to review and then submit.  It may take 15 to 30 seconds to check your post so please be patient. Your submission will immediately appear in “Upcoming News” where everyone can view and vote on it by smacking it to make it more popular.

  • Smack It and Make It Popular: Participate in the collaborative editorial process by clicking the “Smack It” button if the submission is something you like best. As you “Smack It”, you contribute to the popularity of any given item. You also build a history of Smacking that you or your friends can view.  Smack an item by clicking on the words “Smack It” at the bottom of the Smack It button.  If you want to see who else has smacked it, read comments or view related links, click on the number and click on the tabs below to get to your area of interest.

Items in the “Upcoming News” section appear as often as someone submits a story.  Once a submission has earned the honor of being smacked with the “Smack It” button enough times, it then becomes “popular” and jumps to the homepage in its specific category under “Published News”. This is very important, the news you choose to be popular goes to “Published News” and the news that has not been smacked enough stays in “Upcoming News”.  If enough people are posting, your story may only be on the page for a matter of hours.  So tell your friends to smack it as soon as possible to get it to the “Published News”.  If it becomes one of the most popular, it qualifies as a “Top 5” in the right hand column. If a submission doesn't receive enough smacks within a specific time period, it simply moves to the next page.

  • Bury It: If you find fishing stories, etc with bad links, off-topic content, or duplicate entries, click “Bury.” That’s how we get the spam and junk off the site and let the good stuff rise to the top where it belongs. The system only works when users actively participate on a large scale, so make sure to do your part and “Smack It” and “Bury” content that matters to you!

  • Share It: Invite your friends or find them on FishSmack.com and add them to your friends list. Then your friends can track what you’re Smacking and you can see what they Smack as well, enabling you to collectively find and share news together. Simply click on your profile in the “Main Menu” box and smack away to add friends and comments. Email your friends (Smackers or non-Smackers) the stories that you like. Simply press the “Tell a Friend” link below any story and enter their email address.

  • Discuss It: Press the Discuss Button under any story and share your opinions by commenting.  The number of comments will show below the submission.

  • Enjoy It:  Enjoy by clicking on your favorite tab to read the stories and submissions specifically related to your areas of interest or put a keyword in the search box.  It’s that simple.  Another way to find information is the “Sort By” links at the top right of the page.  If you are in “Published News”, click these to give results by day, yesterday, this week, this month or year.  If you are in “Upcoming News” click these to give results by newest, oldest, most popular, and least popular.

There’s a lot more to it if you want to explore.  Just enjoy and learn along the way.  Once you start, it’s hard to stop!  We just want you to have fun and smack it!

Thanks from the FishSmack Team.
